Please join the National Clinician Consultation Center (NCCC) in partnership with the Health Resources and Services HIV/AIDS Bureau (HRSA HAB) and Bureau of Primary Health Care (HRSA BPHC) for this webinar developed for clinicians and other health care providers.

Substance use disorders (SUD) are a significant public health concern for the growing population of older adults. Complications that occur with increasing frequency with age, such as medical comorbidity, cognitive impairment, and frailty, contribute to the potential adverse interactions between substance misuse and an aging brain. During this webinar, we will discuss how aging and cognitive impairment intersect with substance use. We will describe practical strategies for how to adapt screening assessment and treatment for older patients with substance use disorder with the aim of empowering providers to better care for older adults with SUD.

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

1. Identify the impact of substance use on older adults’ cognitive impairment
2. Describe a workup for substance use in an older adult with cognitive impairment
3. Incorporate care of substance use disorder into an older adult’s brain health plan
4. Adapt substance use disorder treatment for an older adult with cognitive impairment

Speaker Information:

Triveni DeFries, MD, MPH (pronounced trah-vein-ee dee-freeze) is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at UCSF, where she also completed a fellowship in Primary Care Addiction Medicine. She is an internist and addiction medicine physician at SFGH’s general medicine primary care clinic and attends on the hospital’s inpatient addiction medicine consult service. She also works as a clinician consultant for the NCCC’s Substance Use Warmline since 2019. She previously worked with the Indian Health Service in the Navajo Nation where she focused on improving the use of medications for alcohol use disorder.

Christy Soran, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH). She is a primary care clinician and educator in the Richard Fine People’s Clinic at SFGH and the Medical Director at the Outpatient Buprenorphine Induction Clinic (OBIC) through the Division of Substance Use and Addiction Medicine. Her areas of interest are the integration of addiction medicine treatment in primary care, the overlap of substance use and chronic pain, medical curriculum, and educating herself and trainees about patient-empowered clinical care and building trustworthiness in medicine.
