Please join the National Clinician Consultation Center (NCCC) in partnership with the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Bureau of Primary Health Care for this webinar, developed for health center clinicians.

Pain and substance use disorders (SUD) co-occur frequently, and access to medical treatment for both has been appreciably disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this webinar, consultants from the National Substance Use Warmline will provide a detailed discussion of buprenorphine, which can be used effectively for managing chronic pain in patients with SUD. Speakers will also highlight therapeutic approaches that have evolved recently for initiating buprenorphine. Following this webinar, participants will be able to more confidently assess and manage pain in persons with opioid use disorder and other SUDs.

Participants will:

1. Identify common trends impacting the care of adults with SUD and chronic pain
2. Discuss buprenorphine formulations that can be used as medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and chronic pain
3. Describe newer approaches in transitioning from opioid agonists to buprenorphine with co-occurring SUDs and chronic pain

Speaker Information:

Jacqueline P. Tulsky, MD, is a board-certified primary care internist and addiction medicine specialist. She is a principal consultant with the NCCC’s National Substance Use Warmline and Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in the HIV, ID, and Global Medicine Division at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFGH). She is an active clinician educator and trainer in topics ranging from HIV treatment and prevention to motivational interviewing in primary care.
